Starting in 2010, Shorefast Foundation invited designers to Fogo Island and Change Islands to learn its history, experience the landscapes, and to meet and get to know islanders. The designers were commissioned to design meaningful pieces using regional materials and construction techniques. Collaborating with local artisans and makers, they would add to the evolution of outport design. Coming from Newfoundland, Quebec, Ontario, the United States, England, Scotland, Denmark, Sweden, and the Netherlands, they worked with their Newfoundland counterparts to bring these pieces to life. This process formed strong relationships between designer and craftspeople and resulted in strangely familiar yet beautiful contemporary objects.
