Skilled Cabinetmaker

The Fogo Island Shop is seeking a Skilled Cabinetmaker to join its growing team on Fogo Island, based in the newly renovated Society of United Fishermen’s Hall in Barr’d Islands. If you enjoy working with wood, are good with your hands and creative with a keen eye for detail, this could be the perfect position for you. 

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

Building, Repairing, preparing for finish, and finishing high quality, custom furniture and wooden pieces for the Fogo Island Shop.

 

Specific duties will include (but are not limited to):

 

  • Setting up and operating a variety of woodworking machines. Using various hand tools to fabricate and repair wooden high-grade furniture and cabinets.
  • Studying blueprints or drawings of articles to be constructed or repaired, and planning the sequence of cutting or shaping operations to be performed.
  • Marking outlines or dimensions of parts on paper or lumber stock, according to blueprint or drawing specifications.
  • Matching materials for color, grain, or texture.
  • Setting up and operating woodworking machines, such as power saws, jointer, mortiser, tenoner, molder, and shaper, to cut and shape parts from wood stock.
  • Trimming component parts of joints to ensure snug fit, using hand tools, such as planes, chisels, or wood files.
  • Boring holes for insertion of screws or dowels by hand or using boring machine.
  • Gluing, fitting, and clamping parts and subassemblies together to form complete unit, using clamps or clamping machine.
  • Driving fasteners into joints at designated places to reinforce joints.
  • Sanding and scraping surfaces and joints of articles to prepare articles for finishing.
  • May repair high-grade articles of furniture.
  • May brush or spray assembled articles with protective or decorative materials, such as oil, stain, varnish, or paint. Finishing experience an asset.
  • May install hardware, such as hinges, catches, slides, and drawer pulls.
  • Perform additional duties as per the needs of the Shop.

  • Woodworking experience
  • Finishing experience an asset
  • Good communication skills
  • Exceptionally attentive to detail.
  • Ability to time manage and multi-task.
  • Knowledgeable about the Fogo Island Shop and other initiatives of the Shorefast Foundation.
  • Commitment to upholding the vision and goals of the Shorefast Foundation.
  • Sensitive to the history and culture of rural Newfoundland.

Fogo Island Shop is an initiative of Shorefast Foundation, a registered charity that exists to improve the social, cultural, and economic conditions on Fogo Island, Newfoundland. The Shop is a social business which means that all of its profits are reinvested for the benefit of the local community through the Foundation. Fogo Island Shop sells its products through its woodworking shop on Fogo Island, online at fogoislandshop.ca, and through a various retail partnerships across the country.
