Engaging with the vibrant legacy of quilting on Fogo Island while on a 5-month residency with Fogo Island Arts, Mark Clintberg’s quilt project is a reply to the pivotal Joyce Wieldand works “Reason Over Passion” and “La raison avant la passion”.
The limited edition king size quilts were produced in both French and English verisons in keeping with Wieland's works. Continuing this reversal of the phrase used in Wieland's piece, which in turn quotes former-Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau, every piece of fabric in the quilts has been stitched "wrong" side up, revealing the lighter colored reverse side of the material.
Working closely with a team of quilters on the island and building on artist Yvonne Mullock’s research about fabrics, quilts and local aesthetics on the island, each quilt was sewn locally and one edition can be found in a different room each night at the Fogo Island Inn.
The quilters involved in the production of this project are numerous and include: Beverley Budden, Donna Rowe, Judy Snow, Lillian Dwyer, Maddy Adams, Margaret Freake, Millicent Dwyer, Pat Dawe, Rita Penny, Sharon Reid, Sheila Payne, Violet Adams, Tina Payne, Violet Combden, Wilhelmina Hewitt, and Zita Foley. Other key figures involved in its production include: Jack Stanley, Heather Morton, Cyril Lynch, Iris Stünzi, Kitty Scott, and Zita Cobb.
